There are three marks of a good photo; composition, light and moment. Composition takes practice and moment is in no small part luck, but light can be easy to find if only you are willing to rise early or stay out past dark.

That is precisely what I did one recent spring morning. The dawn air was cold, but didn’t carry the bite it had in the winter—a much more pleasant state from which to watch the sunrise. I set up my tripod and waited for the sun to rise a bit farther. As fiery red began to paint the sky, I snapped photos of the clouds, mountains and tried to get a few of myself.

An accident while taking a long exposure inspired me to create these images. I would release the camera’s shutter then pan quickly from the rising sun to rest on the hard lines of the Tatra mountains, giving a blurred impression the clouds and sunrise and a more defined image of the peaks.

This was all done out of a desire to practice my photography skills, because I sorta feel I have hit a slump. I am not worsening, but I don’t see my photos improving at all. I want to toss things up and see if I cannot become a more creative photographer because of it.

Andrew
